When you're a kid a lot of the times you see something on television such as a show about lawyers or see someone in person do something very heroic and cool like firefighters saving people from a burning building and say to yourself that's what you want to do when you grow up. It's usually something cool and exciting that gets the attention of young children. You very seldom here a child say they want to grow up and be an elevator weight tester. That's because it's a job that isn't glamorized. Nor do they say they want to become a Hamilton anxiety doctor. Doctor, maybe. Like a brain surgeon or a veterinarian. Nothing specific, though. The thing is, not that many children grow up and follow through on their dreams.
The biggest reason for that is because they change their minds a lot. One day they want to be an actor, the next day a race car driver, the day after a world famous athlete. Kids are supposed to change their minds and not worry about their careers at an early age. However, there are a select few young people out there who know exactly what they want do when they grow up and follow through on those aspirations. Whether it's wanting to become a mechanic after going to a collision repair Vancouver shop and being fascinated with engines or following in the footsteps of a parent or older sibling, planning for the future goes a long way in making sure those career dreams are met.
Whatever age that is, knowing what you want to do for a career is a great start. There are plenty of adults out there who still don't know what they want to do for a career. Planning ahead by training in certain skills, volunteering and studying hard in school are things you should be doing. If you know you want to repair heaters and air conditioners, take courses that specialize in things such as how to work a temperature calibrator, study hard and do well in all your science courses and see if you can volunteer or intern at a heating and air conditioning repair shop. Follow around a repairman for a day to get a feel for the job. Or just go out and volunteer in the community to show you are dedicated.
Whatever it is you want to be when you grow up, be it working with heat shrink tubing, playing tennis or helping people, take the necessary steps to achieve your career goals. No one is just going to give you a job at a dentist's office or hand you a scholarship to law school if you do nothing. You have to go out there and earn such things. |
